The 30-30-30 method has one problem

Nobody eats 30 grams of protein at 6:40 in the morning. Here's the rule, from the man who wrote it.

What the method actually is

Three numbers, in order. Tap any one of them.

30grams of protein
A real dose, not a splash of milk in your coffee. The number isn't arbitrary: research on muscle protein synthesis puts the per-meal threshold in roughly this range, and most people's breakfast comes in at about a third of it.
30minutes of waking
Before anything else. Before the commute, before the gym. This is the part that makes the whole rule hard, because thirty minutes after waking is the least convenient half hour of the day to cook.
30minutes of easy cardio
Low intensity, steady state. The version that went viral puts a ceiling around 135 beats a minute. A walk counts. A bike counts. If you are out of breath, you are going too hard for this particular leg.

Try building 30 grams before 7am, every day

Tap what you'd actually eat. Watch what it costs you in food and in minutes.

0 g of 30
Protein 0 gTime at the stove 0 minWashing up nothing
Start tapping. The average American breakfast stops at about eleven grams.

So what actually happens is you skip it. You have a black coffee, you go train on nothing, and you tell yourself you'll catch up at lunch.

You don't. Three months later you're still wondering why the early alarms haven't moved anything.

The rule isn't wrong. The rule is just hard to follow before 7am.

Which is worth saying plainly, because most people draw the wrong conclusion from it. They decide they lack discipline, and they quit a protocol that was never asking for discipline in the first place. It was asking for thirty grams. The protein was never the hard part. The hour was.

Once you see it as an arithmetic problem instead of a willpower problem, it becomes solvable. There are maybe six ways around it. Some of them take ninety seconds.

The window is the whole problem

Wake at 6:40 and the protocol closes its door at 7:10. Here is what has to fit inside it.

6:40 awake
7:10 window shuts
7:40 cardio done
30 minutes to find and eat 30 gramsthen 30 minutes of easy cardio

Why thirty, and why the morning

The number isn't arbitrary. The timing is more arguable than people admit.

30grams is a threshold, not a target
In a 2014 controlled feeding study, adults ate the same total daily protein two ways: spread evenly at about 30 g a meal, or skewed towards dinner the way most people actually eat. The even days produced roughly 25% more muscle protein synthesis over 24 hours. Same protein. Different distribution. That is where the 30 comes from.
Mamerow et al., Journal of Nutrition, 2014.
11grams is what breakfast usually is
Breakfast is where the distribution breaks. A typical one lands near 11 g, against a threshold near 30, while dinner sails past it. So the day is back-loaded, and the meal with the largest shortfall is the one you have the least time to cook.
30minutes is the weakest leg of the rule
Worth saying plainly, because most people repeating this rule won't: there is no strong evidence that thirty minutes beats ninety. The window isn't mechanistic, it's behavioural. "In the morning" slides until it's lunchtime. "Within thirty minutes of waking" either happens or it doesn't, and you know which by 7:10.
135is a ceiling, not a goal
The cardio leg is capped rather than pushed because the point is that you can do it again tomorrow. Hard sessions buy recovery debt. Easy ones compound. If you're out of breath, you're training something else.

That's the short version, and it's about as far as a web page should go. The long version, including what the evidence does not support, is the reason we're writing the book.

What it's about

Most mornings start with caffeine and nothing else, and the first real food of the day arrives hours later, usually from a packet. This e-book is about what that costs, and about the versions of 30-30-30 that survive any given week-day.

The average American breakfast lands at about eleven grams of protein. The rule asks for thirty. That gap, five mornings a week, is the whole subject.
